Same sex marriage in Australia

‘The Marriage Act defines marriage as ‘the union of a man and a woman to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life’.

Married for life, is what the Marriage Act 1961 claims, but yet each year the rates of divorce are getting higher, and yet, same sex couples are still not aloud of be legally recognized as a married couple in the eyes of the Australian Government. While this is happening in Australia, people from other countries are marrying Turtles and train stations… you would think after so long and so much change that two PEOPLE that love each other would be able to get married.

There have been many support rally’s in Australia to try and legalize same sex marriage, and if you have ever been to one, you would notice that most of the participants are from the ages 14-30. So is the only real problem the older generation? Most of the Australian Parliament is made up of MEN over the age of 30, very few women, and very few people under the age of 30. Same sex marriage has only become a priority in Australia over the last 10 years, and why is this? Because the younger generations are able to vote now and have an opinion, but the younger generations still sadly do not over rule all the older people voting.

Compared to the general population, if you are apart of the LGBT community, you are more likely to attempt suicide. Young LGBT people aged from 16-27 are five times more likely to attempt suicide then others.

I know i am not the first to say this and i will certainly not be the last, but we need to CHANGE as a country so we can grow. We need to be teaching people that are not aware to the serious consequences of how even just the thought of something could lead someone to take their own life.

In the world we live in right now, we need equal love and support. Love is the key to change, don’t let that candle of opportunity burn out, show your support.
